20th Century vs. 21st Century Skills


This page is intended to describe the meaning of "21st Century Skills" - especially from a teacher's perspective. There is a history of how things have been done for decades, but as society changes, new skills need to be utilized by our students. There are two steps to get away from "old" skills and towards "new" skills.

* Directions

First - how we can do the "old" things using new technology. Blackboards became whiteboards... now we can use SMARTBoards to save what we've typed. But it's still writing words on the board. It's mildly transformative, but it isn't all that different.

The crux: how we can do entirely new things using technology. Traditional classrooms (20th Century) put the teacher in charge of the information. Now, we can have students create content using resources like Wikis and Podcasts.

Using a SMARTboard to capture students ideas - allows you to go back over your lesson, to show absent students the notes, and to allow students to contribute to the class document that can be posted later.

Podcasting in the classroom - students create authentic resources for other students to share. Students produce a "show" that incorporates the objectives of an old lesson but utilizes new skills.

Teachers and students can use Internet resources such as YouTube, Teacher Tube, and Discovery Streaming to enhance student learning experiences with a variety of media, as opposed to film strips and VHS tapes.

Jigsaw type activities, mini research project - create a wiki with links (great for elementary) and students could report back on the wiki so all of the information is kept in a central spot, digitally

Wikis and other internet classrooms. Students can now access information they missed in class before they return to school and no one has to pick up the work in the school office.

Collaborative activities are fostered over individual ideas using collaborative tools such as wikis, blogs, forums. Students learn to use individual ideas for the good of a team instead of producing redundancy in individual projects. Together students assimilate ideas and think beyond the obvious to spin creative new ideas generated through group activities. Student were limited to a few minutes of class time in the past.

My lesson designs have been written in MS word for years, now I can import those same files into PowerPoint and add slides of instructional techniques. I play the PowerPoint lesson in a loop throughout the lesson so students can review the learning expereince at any point. Students late to class or absent can review the lesson. Students and teachers can access the lesson from the internet from home thanks to wikispaces.

Student Research Projects: A New Structure and approach: Each student starts out with their own WIKI which has a pre-defined set of pages and navigation which provide a "Research Template". Each page is a step in the research process, or a collector of information. Over several days to weeks or more, each student progresses through the research process page by page, returning and updating/amplifying earlier pages, based on their own individual research assignment or choice of subject. After final approval, students transfer from their wiki the results of their research to a final paper. This includes items such as chapters or sections they have written, references, citations, images, tables etc etc.
The DIFFERENCE is in Teacher Interaction. The teacher can quickly and efficiently see just what each student has written or updated with "recent changes" - daily, or by assignment deadlines etc. They immediately see the new student work and editing inside the growing project. Teachers can receive emails when each student updates particular sections and quickly go directly to the new content. This makes a whole new level of efficient teacher interaction possible.

Presentations - Students can create presentations in the form of a movie, eg. movie maker. This take power point to the next level with movie making elements, transitions, music, timing, etc. A lot more sleeker than pp.

Group assignments are more collaborative and real-life with 24/7 access to web 2.0 tools such as google docs, blogs, wikis, twitter, skype, etc. Resources are endless with the global social networking capabilities.

Teachers using Twitter, Skype, IM, chat to connect with the larger educational community outside of their building. These tools also make it easier to connect within the school district.
